Liberia Government Recognizes A. M. E. Zion University as Leading Institution of Higher Learning PDF Print
In a recent article of the Liberian based INFORMER NEWSPAPER , the African Methodist Episcopal Zion University was sited as one of the six recognized institutions of higher learning in the country. Mr. D. Kaihenneh Singbeh, a writer for the INFORMER NEWSPAPER of Monrovia, Liberia, wrote the recent article.

As stated by Mr. Singbeh, "the government of Liberia says it is alarmed and disappointed over the proliferation of and existence of over 20 bogus universities and colleges in the country." According to one of the government informational officers, Dr. Lawrence Bropleh, "the administration of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is concluding the major clampdown that will lead to the closure of these substandard and bogus learning institutions." Dr. Bropleh continues by saying that out of some 30 universities and colleges in the country of Liberia, the Liberian Government recognizes only six. He identified the six as the state's University of Liberia, Cuttington University, United Methodist University, African Methodist Episcopal Zion University, African Methodist Episcopal University, and Stella Maris.

In a more recent news conference, Dr. Bropleh stated that the rest not mentioned, as recognized institutions were all bogus and face closure shortly, if they fail to comply with government standards to be released by the Commission on Higher Education. He further stated that these bogus universities and colleges are polluting the educational system of Liberia, such as admitting unfit college and university products. They are operating when they should not.

Rev. Mulbah B. Gray, President of the A. M. E. Zion University and members of the Board of Trustees met recently in their Annual Board Meeting to review the status of the university and to finds ways to continue to promote excellence. Currently, the Board of Trustees, led by the Chair, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Monroe, Presiding Bishop of Liberia, and Dr. A. Nadu Cooper, Vice Chair are seeking to find resources to relocate the university on a 100 acre plot of land located in Po River. Presently the university's enrollment is around 900 students and steadily increasing each semester. The need to relocate is imperative. Bishop Monroe stressed how important it is for the university to maintain their standing in the country and guard against any and all violations.
