Bishops Presents AME & CME Church Officials with a Major Contribution For Haiti Relief PDF Print
ImageOn January 12, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck southern Haiti. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake epicenter was located 10 miles southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince. Numerous significant aftershocks followed the initial quake. The earthquake caused extensive damage in Port-au-Prince, including the Haiti presidential palace and several local churches. An unknown number of people remained trapped under collapsed buildings. International media cited the Government of Haiti as reporting at least 100,000 deaths from the earthquake with casualties expected to rise. Humanitarian organizations from around the world started organizing to help with this devastating disaster.

The Board of Bishops of the A. M. E. Zion Church wasted no time organizing to aid in this crisis. The Board sent out a request of all of the congregations in the denomination to respond to provide relief to the earthquake victims of Haiti. AME Zion churches from California to Indiana to Alabama and Mississippi, Tennessee, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina not to mention those from London and Nigeria and many others, poured in support in this Connectional effort.

On March 3, 2010, the Board of Bishops, on behalf of the A.M.E. Zion Church made a jaw-dropping presentation at “The Gathering”, a conference that brought all of the black Methodists together from the A.M.E. Zion Church, A.M.E. Church and C.M.E. Church. The Board presented a check in the amount of $100,000 to the AME Church and a check for $100,000 to the C.M.E. Church to help with the devastation as they have established ministries in Haiti. A separate donation in the amount of $50,000 was given to the Church World Service organization, who serves along with the National Council of Churches and has an established history of giving to situations such as the crisis in Haiti.
