It’s Time to Apply for College PDF Print
ImageIt's your students' final years in high school, and the heat is on. Students are contemplating colleges, agonizing over essays, and stressing over the SAT. It seems that every student is scrambling to be accepted by the school of his or her dreams. This is the time when parents and guidance counselors hear the perennial refrain: "Do you think I will be accepted? What are colleges looking for?"

First off - finding the right college to apply to is extremely important. Considering your interests, strengths, and even extra-curricular activities can help you make this decision. Much like your son or daughter, the colleges desire to succeed. Colleges succeed when they recruit, admit, retain, and graduate students who are a good match for what they offer. Just as each student has unique qualities and characteristics, each college or university is special and different in some way. Similarly, your students should look for an institution where they truly fit academically, socially, athletically, artistically, or according to whatever dimension is most important.

Once you have decided which school(s) you would like to apply to, the following college application tips will help ensure the necessary steps are taken for a complete application submission:

  • College Application Tip #1 — Application Form

Find out which schools will allow you to fill out a common application for college admission and which ones require a specific form - just make sure the information is current and correct. Read the instructions carefully and fill it out completely! In many cases, your application will not be considered if you have not followed the instructions correctly. Most colleges allow you to submit their applications online. Many prefer this method. The individual college’s websites will explain this process.

  • College Application Tip #2 — High School Transcripts

Request that transcripts from your high school be sent directly to the college in which you are applying to. The admission committee is interested in your records from all four years of high school. Colleges prefer students who challenge themselves by taking demanding courses and who show improvement over the four years.

Although the college admission committee will only have part of your 12th grade records on the transcript when you apply, many accept you on the condition that you continue to do well during your last semester. So be sure to keep your grades up!

  • College Application Tip #3 — Standardized Test Scores

Determine whether the school requires the composite or individual scores from your SAT test. The SAT Subject Tests are required by many four-year colleges. Check with the colleges where you are applying to find out if they require the SAT Subject Test.

  • College Application Tip #4 — Letters of Recommendation

Get a list of recommendation letter requirements from the schools and ask a trusted teacher, boss or other acquaintance to write a letter of recommendation for you. Recommendations from guidance counselors, teachers, and others help the admission committee learn things about you that test scores and grades don’t reflect. The number and type of recommendations you need varies from college to college.

  • College Application Tip #5 — Personal Essay

Draft a personal essay in accordance with the schools' policies. This is your opportunity to show colleges what sets you apart from the other applicants. Your responses to essay questions help admissions officers understand your motivations, creativity, and personality. That's why it is important to start writing your essays as early as possible. Make your essays personal, but stay within the guidelines and carefully answer the questions.

  • College Application Tip #6 — Interviews

Find out if your schools of choice offer interviews so you can speak with a representative for more in-depth information. An interview can be a great chance to emphasize unique qualities and contributions that you are unable to include in the application. If you schedule an interview, practice ahead of time with family or friends. Rehearse your answers to potential questions to ensure that your answers are well organized. But don't try to memorize them. You want to stay sincere and personal.

  • College Application Tip #7 — Meet the Deadline

Make sure all of your materials are in well before the deadline!

There are many websites dedicated to assist in helping you through this process. Searching on College Preparation, or Applying for College will return some of the top results. Some suggested sites are:
