Making Smart Health Decisions PDF Print
ImageFebruary is Black History Month and has been celebrated since 1926. It first began as Negro History Week during the second week of February when Dr. Carter G. Woodson wanted to bring to light the omission of accomplishments by blacks in history books. He chose that week because it coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

Although black people have continued to make strides and shape the United States, health rates on average for chronic diseases, infections and death have taken a toll. Some health problems are caused by genes, but most of the top "killers" are behavior related. The everyday decisions that are made about food consumption and physical activity affect our health and productivity.
  • African American women have the highest rates of being overweight or obese compared to other groups in the U.S. About four out of five African American women are overweight or obese.

  • In 2007, African Americans were 1.4 times as likely to be obese.

  • In 2003-2004, African American children between ages 6 -17 were 1.3 times as likely to be overweight.
The time for New Year's resolutions may have come and gone, but February can be the month to renew the commitment to be a better you, to get the info you need to make smart health decisions that will help you live longer, healthier and happier.

ImageSome tips for making smarter healthy diet and exercise choices are:
  • Sweat it out – make time for a 30 min walk, take the stairs at work, pass up the parking space closest to the door of the store.

  • Weigh daily – Keeping tabs on your normal weight range will help you spot when your body weight creeps up.

  • Use online resources – Many websites offer in-depth nutritional and exercise information.

  • Stick to a preset calorie quota – Each morning decide how many calories you will eat for the day.

  • Busy schedules can lead to bad food choices - Sit down weekly to develop a meal plan, do the shopping and stick with it.

  • Get plugged into health events in your community - most of which come at a relatively low cost or are free to participants.
We all want to feel and look our best and it starts with the daily lifestyle choices we make. Planning healthy food selections can be challenging with our busy schedules. Making the time to eat right and be physically active will put you on the right path to achieving a healthy weight.
