Biography :
An ordained elder, experienced trainer, and innovative leader, Rev. KathrynGertrude Brown serves as the General Secretary of the Christian Education Department. Succeeding a line of dynamic leaders, Rev. Brown was elected in July 2012 at the 49 th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She is honored to be the first female to hold this position.

Born and raised in Harlem, NY, Rev. Brown was educated in the New York City Public School System. She rejoices in every opportunity to dispel negative myths about life in Harlem. Rev. Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Relations from Salem College in Salem, West, Virginia and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Community Planning in Baltimore, MD. She has pursued studies at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. and received an honorary doctorate in ministry from Livingstone College.

Rev. Brown has served the church in multiple roles including, pastor, Youth Director, Local Director of Christian Education, District Director of Young Adults, Conference Director of Christian Education and Episcopal Director of Christian Education. Her work at the denominational level began when she was asked to serve as the Program Coordinator for the newly formed ministry for young adults. After serving in this capacity for several years, Rev. Dr. Raymon Hunt, (Rev. Brown’s predecessor) invited her to join the staff of the Christian Education Department as the Program Coordinator. Rev. Brown also served as the Assistant Advisor for the Connectional Steering Committee of the Young Adults in Christian Ministries.

DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW
The mission of the Christian Education Department of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is to unify, promote and supervise Christian training that fosters the development of credible, committed Christian disciples. Through Biblically-based, doctrinally sound, innovative and relevant education, training and worship, the Department works collaboratively with the Board of Christian Education to disciple the entire membership of the denomination.

The Department fulfills its mission through the following organizations, commissions and ministries the Varick International Christian Youth Council (VICYC), Assembly of Christian Educators (ACE), Young Adults in Christian Ministries (YACM), Varick’s Children, Zion Women Rock, the Commission for Leadership Excellence, the Commission for Family Life, the Commission for Spiritual Formation, Office of Church School Literature.
